second grade habitat project
Ms.Vaughan’s second grade class is working on a habitat project. This desert habitat has a camel, cactus, spider plant, and many more cool things. In this room you can tell they are having a lot of fun!
Jump Into Fall with a Color Wheel
11-17 -10 The first graders made color wheels out of paper leaves. Mrs. Patten and Mrs. Miller’s class’s meet with Ms. Wilkinson on Mondays and Mr. Johnson’s class meets on Fridays. They first mixed their colors together, and then traced out six leaves to go on their black, circular, paper. To finish this project, they glued their leaves in the order of the color wheel on their paper. This project is both fun and helps the first graders learn the order and the different colors of the color wheel.
Ocean Floor
6th graders constructed a model of the ocean floor. They had to build various topographical features such as, trenches, atolls, islands, seamounts, and mid-ocean ridge. They molded clay to form these shapes.

Sock It To Me
Student Council sponsored a sock drive. Over 1,000 pairs of socks were donated to Open Door Mission. Student council members created a box for students to throw their socks in. What a great project!

Reading Minutes
Rumsey Students were challenged to read a combined total of 50,000 minutes by Mrs. Kelberlau. The students delivered so Sean Watson, the magician, visited Rumsey and made Mrs. Kelberlau disappear!!!. Here is a student assisting Sean with a magic trick.

On Wednesday December 1st, students in Mrs. Cieslik’s class played instruments and sang, “Wade in the Water,” a traditional American spiritual. Damien Burger, Lauren Frady and Ellie Morrison (pictured above) are playing wood blocks to the beat. Rachel Loerch (right) is playing two bars on the glockenspiel every time the singers sing "wade" in the song.

Volleyball Tournament

The Red Bulls from 6th grade beat the 5th grade Titans in the Rumsey Station Annual Volleyball Tournament. It was a close game, but Red Bull came out on top in the end. Mrs. Schwartz’s class gets the prized Champion’s Volleyball in their room for one year.
Poetry
6th graders are starting a poetry unit in writing. Currently they are being immersed in poetry by reading poems. They are learning techniques that mentor poets use. Later in the unit they will use all they learned to write their own poetry.

Holiday Cards
6th graders have been making holiday cards for troops overseas. The cards will be delivered to the troops as a holiday present. Students thanked them for their service and wished them happy holidays. The troops have the option to write back to students.

Red Ribbon Week
On Monday October 25th our elementary students were dressed in red to prevent drugs for red ribbon week. Grades k-6th got to participate in this event. The kids had fun dressing in the same color to show they are drug free as you can see in these pictures. The phrase of this day was “Be Drug Free!” Kids received a red ribbon if they wore red.
Masks
6th graders worked on plaster masks in art class. They made a plaster mold of their own faces. Classmates laid 2 layers of plaster gauze on people’s faces. In following art classes students will decorate their masks using other materials. Their masks had to fit one of the following categories: ceremonies/rituals, theater/drama, hunting /war.
3rd grade math
This is a photo of two 3rd grade girls playing Collect $2.00. This is a math game that will help them learn their money by teaching them how to make different combinations of coins and dollars that will make $2.00.

October 19, 2010 was a big day for Rumsey Station! But it was an especially big day for Mrs. Cologne!!! Rumsey had been planning for Patricia Polacco to come for about 2 years, and the wonderful day finally came! The staff and kids here at Rumsey Station had a great time listening to her entertaining voice! Well we enjoyed having her and we would love to have her back another year!

Fire Safety Day!
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders all gathered in the mini gym for Fire Safety Day the first week in October. Everyone learned what to do in case of a fire and to never play with matches. Firemen took all students outside and taught them all about the fire trucks and equipment. The kids had a magnificent time learning and are grateful to the fire fighters for their time and teaching us how to be safe!

walk to school day!!
October, 5th 2010 was International Safe Walk to School Day!!! Kids were allowed to wear sunglasses and hats if they chose to! If you walked or rode your bike to school you received a “Walk to School “wrist -band! What a great way to exercise! Kids got great exercise AND helped the world go green by preventing exhaust pollution from every car that transports kids to school every day! Keep up the good work!

Zoo Academy
On October 1, Zoo Academy presented to the 6th graders in the mini gym. They had prepared 4 stations, Tundra, Ocean, Jungles, and Healthy Habits. The students participated in hands-on activities like trying to tie your shoes with no thumbs. They learned about the diet of a shark, a gorilla, and a giraffe. They also learned how the Henry Doorly Zoo identifies their penguins.

Owl Pellets
6th graders dissected owl pellets on September 27th. 6th grade students are currently learning about ecosystems and how they work. They identified bones and hypothesized what animals the owl might eat. Some found skulls from a small rodent while others found the jaw of a bird. The students separated the bones from the fur in a hands-on experiment during Science class.
